SHINGLEHOUSE, PA -- Gertrude Kemp, 101, formerly of Eleven Mile Road, Shinglehouse, PA, died Monday, March 9, 2009 in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, PA, after a long illness.
Born March 2, 1908 in Shinglehouse, PA, she was a daughter of Alfred and Gertrude White Prince. In 1932, she married Charles "Todd" Kemp who died on October 13, 1982.
Mrs. Kemp attended Shinglehouse High School. During World War II she was employed at the former Eldred Munitions Plant. She later worked at the former HiĀ­ Q in Olean, NY and drove a school bus in Chrystal, PA.
She was the Eleven Mile correspondent for the Potter Enterprise in Coudersport, PA for more than 50 years.
She was a member of the Chrystal United Methodist Church and a member of the Chrystal Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Oswayo Valley Senior Center in Shinglehouse.
Surviving are many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many great-greatĀ­ grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Kemp was preceded in death by two sons, Charles L. Packer, Sr. and George R. Packer, Sr.; a stepson, Virgil l. Kemp; two stepdaughters, Virginia C. Ogilvie and Florence Walker; two brothers, George Prince and Clarence Prince; and two sisters, Jenny Hanson and Arlie Foster.
Friends may call on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Daniel P. Grimes, pastor of the Chrystal United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Fred Kemp, pastor of the Portville Baptist Church, Portville, NY, will officiate. Burial will be in the Chrystal Cemetery, Chrystal, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oswayo Valley Senior Center, 1005 East Honeoye Street, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.
