Shinglehouse, PA---Helen D. Olson, 89, of Shinglehouse, died Saturday, May 29, 2010 in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit, Coudersport.
Born April 5, 1921 in Shinglehouse, she was a daughter of Ellery and Hazel Osborne Cornelius. On June 27, 1942 in Sanburg, NY, she married Harold “Ole” Olson, who survives.
She was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School and a graduate of Eleanor Beauty School in Niagara Falls, NY
Mrs. Olson was a beautician, owning and operating the former Helen’s Beauty Shop in Shinglehouse. From 1955 to 1972, she along with her husband, owned and operated the former Shinglehouse Cheese Factory, which was well known throughout the area.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Shinglehouse where she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir, and had also served on the Board of Trustees. She also was a Girl Scout leader and was the neighborhood chairman of the Girl Scouts in Shinglehouse. Mrs. Olson was also a former member of the Olean Chapter of Sweet Adelines, where she served as secretary.
Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Mary C. Wardlaw of Shinglehouse, Linea M. (Garry) Taylor of Ceres, and Cherry K. (Michael) Feely of Bolivar, NY; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Olson was predeceased by a brother, Richard Cornelius; and two sisters, Virginia Cramer and Dortha Wood.
Friends may call at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 from 9 to 11 a.m. at which time funeral services will be held. The Rev. Russell J. Horning, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Shinglehouse, will officiate. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Kitchen Fund, PO Box 68, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.
