SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. -- Donald A. Lawton, 88, of Powerhouse Road died Saturday (Aug. 15, 1998) at his home after a short illness.
Born June 18, 1910, in Sartwell Creek, a son of Newton and Bessie Fitzgerald Lawton. On Sept. 2, 1946, in Bolivar, N.Y. he married former Elizabeth M. "Tootie" Cross, who survives.
Mr. Lawton attended Bell Run Country School. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Medal with three bronze stars.
He worked in local oil fields for many years and later worked for the former Clark Bro. in Olean, retiring in 1970.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Jerry D. (Betsy) Lawton of Shinglehouse and Larry F. (Sally Ann Davis) Lawton of Bath, N.Y.; five grandchildren and two great-grandsons; two sisters, Rocelia Cutler and Vera Lowe, both of Shinglehouse; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lawton was predeceased by a daughter, and two brothers, Joseph Lawton and Vernon Lawton.
Friends may call at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, Pa., from 7 to 9 p/m. Monday and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 18, 1998) at which time funeral and committal services will be held. Pastor Donald R. Lawton of Bath, the deceased's grandson, and pastor Floyd E. Merriam of Houghton, N.Y. will officiate.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
Military honors will be accorded by members of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530 and the Potter County Honor Guard on Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to McKean County Visiting Nurses/Hospice Association, Bradford, Pa. 16701, or to the American Cancer society.
