Herbert 'Jack' Estes Shinglehouse, PA----Herbert "Jack" Estes, 90, formerly of Shinglehouse, PA, died Friday, November 26, 2010 in the Golden Living Center, Shippenville. Born July 22, 1920 in Oswayo, he was a son of Herbert T. and Viva Maude Kilbourne Estes. On April 1, 1943 in Bailey Chapel, Fort Eustis, Va., he married Maurine Swift, who died on May 2, 2008. Mr. Estes was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School, class of 1938 and attended Lock Haven University and Penn State University on the GI bill. A former resident of Buffalo, NY, Mr. Estes entered the military in 1942 serving in the U.S. Army during World War II as a mechanic and motorpool sergeant for the 28th Special Service Company. He served on Guadalcanal, New Hebrides and the Philippines. He received the Philippines Liberation ribbon, the sharp shooter badge for rifle and carbine, and the motorpool badge for mechanic and driver. After the war, Mr. Estes and his wife lived in several places before moving to Shinglehouse in 1956 and for several years they lived in Kentucky. He was employed by Daystrom Furniture in Olean and later by Air Preheater in Wellsville. He retired as an inspector from Dresser-Rand Company in Olean, NY in 1983 after 26 years of service. He was a member of the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher for many years and served on various boards and committees. He was a former member of the Oswayo Valley Historical Society in Shinglehouse. He enjoyed woodworking. He loved build and tinker with engines and other mechanical things. He and Maurine built a home in Shinglehouse and a log home in Kentucky after their retirement. During his time in the Golden Living Center he assembled numerous wooden models which he gave away to staff and family. All who came in contact with him loved his friendliness and wise-cracking sense of humor. Surviving are four sons, Michael J. (Pel) Estes of Concrete, Wash., Stuart N. (Vivian) Estes of Shippenville, Philip A. (Jean) Estes of Shinglehouse, and Cory S. (Judy) Estes of Bucyrus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Westley of Newcastle, WA; a sister-in-law, Dolores Estes of Olean, NY; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Estes was predeceased by three brothers, Lyle B. Estes, Dexter Estes, and Richard R. "Dick" Estes; and a sister, Jane Frye. Friends may call on Monday, November 29, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, where funeral services will follow at noon. The Rev. William Houben, retired pastor of Clarion Free Methodist Church and the Rev. Becky L. Edwards, pastor of Shinglehouse United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Rathbone Cemetery, Coneville. Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors on Monday at the funeral home.
