Jacqueline D. “Jacqui” Garland, 70, of Shinglehouse, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 20, 2013 at the Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY. Born September 19, 1943 in Butler, she was a daughter of Vaughn B. and Josephine Haseltine Jones. On December 23, 1966 in Conemaugh Grace Brethren Church in Conemaugh, she married Donald Wade Garland, who survives. She was a graduate of Worthington West Franklin High School in Worthington and a graduate of Clarion State College with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. After graduation Mrs. Garland taught for five years in the Richburg (NY) School District. She then taught in Salamanca (NY) School District for 1 ½ years. Jacqui taught at the Oswayo Valley Elementary School in Shinglehouse for many years, retiring in 2004. She took great pride in teaching and cared deeply for her students and their success. Mrs. Garland was a longtime attendee of the Portville Baptist Church in Portville, NY. She was an avid reader. She enjoyed making all occasion cards to send to friends and family, quilting, and in the past, ceramics. She loved her cats, having rescued several and giving them a loving home. She was a meticulous homemaker and a wonderful cook. Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Wendy D. (James) Janssen, Jr. of West Deer Township (near Pittsburgh); a son, David W. Garland of Pownal, VT (south of Bennington); a granddaughter, Heather L. Learish of Coudersport; a grandson, Dylon L. Garland of Pownal, VT; two brothers, Vaughn (Nancy) Jones, Jr. of Renfrew and Brian Jones of Butler; a sister, Marian Pavlick of Gibsonia; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Garland was predeceased by her parents. Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the Portville Baptist Church, Temple Street, Portville, NY, with the Rev. Robert Cook, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse. Flowers are gratefully declined and will be provided by the family.
