Melvin Lawton, formerly of Shinglehouse, Pa.
BLACK CREEK -Melvin P. Lawton, 95, of Black Creek, died Sunday (May 2, 1999) a College Park Health Care Center in Houghton after a long illness.
Born June 22, 1903, in Eulalia Township, Pa., he was a son of Able John and Ethel Sherwood Lawton. In 1926, he married the former Beulah P. Connor, who predeceased him on Oct. 28, 1981.
Mr. Lawton was employed by E.I. Dupont & Co. in Niagra Falls, retiring on April 4, 1967, after 25 years of service.
A resident of Black Creek for seven years, Mr. Lawton previously lived in Shinglehouse, Pa. He was a former social member of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530.
Surviving are a son, Rayond (Marge) Brinkworth of Angola; two grandchildren; three brothers, John E. Lawton of Cuba, Daniel B. (Lucile) Lawton of Black Creek, and Lyle L. Lawton of Manchester, Tenn.; five sisters, Letha M. Fuller of Warsaw, Thressa, P Burell of Genesee, Pa., Nathelia I. "Tea" (Clifford) Osgood of Lawrenceville, Pa., Agnes J (Clarence) Long of Burkville, Ala., and Beatrice M. (Arnold) Ruhli of Peru, South America; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Lawton was predeceased by five brothers, Harold Lawton, Norman Lawton, Zale Lawton, Howard Lawton, and Earnest Lawton; a sister, Grace E. Corwin.
Friends may call at the Virgil Howard Funeral Home in Shinglehouse on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday (May 5, 1999) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at which time funeral services will be held. The Rev. David E. Lawton, of Bolivar, a nephew of Mr. Lawton, will officiate. Committal services and burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Shinglehouse.
